Trailer of Martian

OVERVIEW

Martian is an Unreal Tournament Death match map that takes place on a Martian outpost.

This outpost consists of several sections that are designed to focus on accommodating distinct weapons and playstyles. Each location is designed to challenge advanced player movement whilst simultaneously presenting diverse gameplay scenarios.

Level Designer

  • Researching Unreal Tournament & Shooter Level Design

  • Creating a Blockout based on proven metrics found in a Gym.

  • Creating a Level Design Document with an Overview, Design Pillars and carefully breaking down each section of the level.

  • Playtesting the Level with Students & Professional players, and iterating upon received feedback.

DOCUMENTATION

  • Researching the video game 'Unreal Tournament' and measuring movement & abilities.

  • Breaking down an existing Deathmatch map in order to figure out a macro level structure.

THE GYM

  • Breaking down different weapon-uses in different types of Environments, and remaking those in a Gym.

  • Creating small game-play-bits that can be used in a modular fashion.

PHOTOGRAPHY

  • Using photographic references for inspiration of theming and potential gameplay spaces.

  • Creating draw-overs of photos taken in Rotterdam, resulting in potential gameplay moments.

  • Sketching & Creating Node maps that represent a well-balanced play experience, that takes choke points, meat grinders and weapon-location balancing in account

  • Creating a Clear Documentation style that helps divide the different rooms in Martian.
